Lacuna

Context

Dossier 01, titled “Lacuna,” is the first issue of 120g’s magazine — featuring previously unpublished photographs of New York by Paolo Pettigiani, shot at Ground Zero specifically for this project, and drawings by Mister Mourão (#158, #159, #164).

The issue’s theme — lacuna, the notion of a gap or absence in architecture and restoration — needed a structure that could hold an introductory essay, three parallel case studies (urban, social, artistic perspectives), and a closing essay, while making the reading flow through three columns of parallel content feel intuitive rather than fragmented.

The magazine

The concept has been “Make the reader feel a lacuna, not just read about it.”

The editorial system runs on a 6×6 grid across 25×35cm pages, optimized from a 100×70cm sheet, with layouts following a 2-column, 3-column, 2-column structure as the issue moves from introduction to case studies to closing essay. The three case studies occupy the central pages, playing with the three columns and flowing in parallel; color, and — only in the first part — the crux desperationis, mark the reading flow, kept intuitive through different colors for inner and outer columns. Printed on Fedrigoni Old Mill 130gsm paper.
