BASE Milano environmental design

Context

BASE Milano is a hybrid cultural space — a former industrial building turned into a living ecosystem — hosting exhibitions, performances, talks, workshops, residencies and coworking for artists, designers, researchers and innovators from around the world.

Problem

BASE’s existing signage — wall-mounted lettering, wooden panels, mobile notice totems — needed to evolve across very different zones (external orientation, the main entrance, the Burò coworking space, indoor wayfinding, outdoor furniture) without discarding what was already there. And BASE’s identity itself is intangible — a motto, “A place for cultural progress,” an institution made of spaces, events and activities — which signage had to somehow translate into something physical.

Concept

Cultural progress becomes a tangible place, and every place needs a boundary — a line that claims space and separates meaningful information from surrounding chaos.

That boundary is a line: sometimes virtual, sometimes physical, sometimes mental. A closed curve defines a surface; extend it vertically and it defines a space. With a single one-dimensional gesture, an entire lived environment is claimed.

Solution

The proposal builds on BASE’s existing signage as a reference for mood, enhancing it where possible, across five areas.

External vertical signage

Complementing the planned horizontal system, external vertical signage improves orientation for first-time visitors and reinforces spatial memory for people who come back.

Main entrance

The central entrance proposal turns BASE’s main access point into a key hub for vertical circulation.

Burò signage

Internal signage for the Burò coworking space focuses on making workstations immediately understandable, supported by a message and correspondence board.

Vertical signage

BASE’s complex spatial layout demands carefully designed internal signage to guide visitor flow across its many rooms during events. Because each event is unique, some require custom-built signage systems — large-scale events often span multiple floors and halls, creating navigation challenges for both new and returning visitors.

Additional improvements and outdoor furniture

A “various and additional” section addresses current gaps in the system, while interactive outdoor furniture reimagines how BASE’s outdoor spaces are experienced.
